IM-1001 was designed to promote viability and function of pancreatic islets in long-term culture. It is comprised of Chitosan, a polycation provided as a dry component and Dextran Sulfate, a polyanion provided in solution. Pancreatic Islets are suspended in the dextran sulfate solution and added to the dry component under agitation which forms poly-electrolytic (PEC) fibers around the islets within the gel.
